New Delhi [India], September 17 (ANI): The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has transferred technology for an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based mammography interpretation model developed at AIIMS to BPL Technologies Limited, marking an important milestone in translating academic research and healthcare innovation into technologies with potential for wider clinical application.
As per the official release, the technology transfer took place on September 16 at AIIMS New Delhi in the presence of Nikhil Tandon, Director, AIIMS New Delhi, and Ajay Jindal, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), BPL Technologies Limited.
The occasion was attended by Govind Makharia, Associate Dean (Research), AIIMS; Velpandian, Head, IPR Cell, AIIMS; Smriti Hari, Professor, Department of Radiology; and Dr Krithika Rangarajan, Associate Professor, Department of Radiology, along with Siddhant and other senior members of BPL Technologies Limited.
The AI model has been developed to support the interpretation of mammography examinations, with the broader objective of supporting radiologists, particularly where expert breast imaging specialists are limited.
The transfer represents a significant industry-academia collaboration between a leading academic medical institution and an Indian healthcare technology company, providing a pathway for the innovation to progress towards further development, validation and potential implementation.
Speaking on the occasion, Nikhil Tandon, Director, AIIMS New Delhi, highlighted the importance of translating research generated within academic institutions into solutions that address real-world healthcare needs. He expressed the hope that this initiative would serve as the beginning of many more such developments emerging from AIIMS, reflecting the institute's continued emphasis on innovation, technology development and the responsible translation of biomedical research into clinical applications.
Dr Rangarajan expressed her gratitude to the technology team at AIIMS, the AIIMS research section and the Ministry of Education, which funded the project. She acknowledged the contributions of the machine learning engineering team at AIIMS New Delhi, including Om Shivom, Kushagra Chaturvedi and Aashish Rastogi; radiologists Dr Amit Gupta and Dr Varun Holla; and the managerial team led by Hema Malhotra, along with other members of the team.
