Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 18 (ANI): Floods have claimed 105 lives in Assam so far this year, with nearly 32,000 people across five districts still affected, according to the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Of the 105 people who have died in flood-related incidents, 64 are male, 24 are female, and 17 are children, according to the latest data released by the state disaster management authority.
Sivasagar has recorded the highest number of flood-related deaths in the state, with 53 fatalities. Charaideo has reported 22 deaths, while nine people have died in Jorhat, eight in Golaghat, four in Karbi Anglong and three in Dhemaji.
The latest figures also show that the flood situation continues to affect thousands of people across the state. Nearly 32,000 people in five districts are still affected by the flooding.
According to the latest ASDMA flood report, 3,198.77 hectares of crop area remain submerged. The continued inundation of agricultural land has raised concerns over crop losses and the impact on the livelihoods of farming communities in the affected areas.
Nearly 3,000 people are currently staying in relief camps and relief distribution centres as authorities continue relief operations and provide assistance to flood-affected residents.
The scale of this year's floods has been significant. More than 12 lakh people across 25 districts and 2,734 villages have been affected by flooding at various stages during the year.
Assam is particularly vulnerable to annual flooding during the monsoon due to its extensive river network, with the Brahmaputra and its tributaries frequently overflowing following heavy rainfall. Flooding regularly affects villages, agricultural fields, roads and other infrastructure across the state.
The recurring floods also force thousands of residents, particularly those living in low-lying and riverine areas, to move to safer locations and depend on relief camps and government assistance.
With thousands of people still affected and more than 3,000 hectares of agricultural land under water, authorities continue to monitor the situation in the affected districts. Relief and rehabilitation measures are being carried out for those displaced or impacted by the floods.
The high number of fatalities recorded this year has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Assam's communities during the annual monsoon season. The state administration and disaster management authorities continue to assess the situation and monitor water levels in rivers and other water bodies.
