Ottawa [Canada], October 18 (ANI): A fire that broke out within the training area of Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta has resulted in fatalities and injuries, with authorities continuing to assess the full extent of the incident.
According to a press release issued by CFB Wainwright on Sunday, the fire ignited at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time on October 17 and spread rapidly beyond the boundaries of the military training area, prompting a response from military and civilian emergency services.
In its press release, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) said emergency responders were working to control the fire and support those affected by the incident.
“It is with profound sadness that the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) confirms the incident resulted in fatalities and injuries. As emergency responders continue their work and the situation continues to evolve, the full extent of the impact remains under assessment,” the release stated.
The CAF said its immediate priority was to support those affected and notify their next of kin. It added that details regarding casualties and injuries would not be confirmed until the notification process was complete.
The military is working closely with emergency services, local authorities and other partners to coordinate response efforts. The safety and security of military personnel, their families and the surrounding community remain a priority, according to the release.
Canadian Minister of National Defence David J McGuinty expressed condolences to those affected and said federal, provincial and municipal authorities were coordinating support.
“The Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, partners across the federal government, including Public Safety, are working with the Government of Alberta and municipal governments to mobilize all necessary support,” McGuinty said.
He also thanked first responders and personnel continuing to work under challenging circumstances.
Chief of the Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan described the incident as a profoundly difficult moment for the Canadian Armed Forces, saying the immediate focus remained on supporting affected personnel and assisting emergency response efforts.
Carignan extended her condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and said authorities were continuing casualty identification and next-of-kin notification procedures.
Lieutenant-General Michael Wright, Commander of the Canadian Army, also expressed sorrow over the fatalities and injuries, adding that soldiers, civilian personnel and emergency responders were working alongside local authorities.
The Canadian Army, he said, remained committed to assisting those affected and providing support wherever required.
The CAF said it would release further information as it became available. (ANI)
