New Delhi [India], September 30 (ANI): Global air passenger demand slipped 0.8 per cent in August 2026 compared to the same period last year, driven lower by sharp regional declines across the Middle East.
The latest traffic data released by the International Air Transport Association showed total passenger capacity increased 0.3 per cent year-on-year, while the worldwide passenger load factor dropped by 0.9 percentage points to 85.1 per cent.
International passenger travel declined 0.9 per cent compared to August 2025, with capacity remaining completely flat year-on-year and load factors settling at 85 per cent. Domestic routes also registered a drop of 0.5 per cent in demand, even as domestic capacity expanded 0.7 per cent, pulling the domestic load factor down 1.1 percentage points to 85.3 per cent.
IATA Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist Marie Owens Thomsen said, “Global demand for air transport contracted by 0.8 per cent compared to August 2025 as the recovery trajectory for carriers in the Middle East was interrupted. The region’s carriers reported that demand was 14.6 per cent lower year-on-year, reversing an improving trend.”
When isolating the impact of the Middle East, passenger numbers painted a different picture. Outside that specific region, international air demand grew 1.3 per cent, while overall global demand rose 0.6 per cent.
“Excluding the Middle East carriers, demand for air travel grew by 0.6 per cent year-on-year in August, half the pace seen in July. With some important exceptions such as domestic China, global connectivity was generally weaker in August,” Owens Thomsen added.
Middle Eastern carriers recorded a 14.2 per cent drop in international demand alongside a 9.0 per cent contraction in capacity, leaving load factors down 4.8 percentage points to 79.1 per cent. This deterioration halted the stabilisation seen since the Iran conflict earlier in the year, with routes between the Middle East and Asia sliding 11.7 per cent.
North American airlines recorded a 1.7 per cent decrease in international traffic, accompanied by a 1.1 per cent capacity drop. Asia-Pacific carriers saw demand edge down 0.1 per cent, weighed down by a 2.0 per cent slide on intra-Asia routes despite a 2.5 per cent rise across the Asia-North America corridor.
In contrast, European operators logged a 2.1 per cent demand increase, supported by a 12.2 per cent surge on routes to Asia that offset a 2.4 per cent dip on transatlantic routes. Latin American and African airlines each posted a 6.7 per cent demand gain.
Across domestic markets, passenger volumes dropped in the United States and Japan, while India recorded a contraction of 7.5 per cent. Domestic China moved higher, aided by summer travel.
“The coming months will reveal whether travellers, whose purchasing power has been reduced by higher energy prices, are adjusting their travel budgets, and might be discouraged from travelling due to the prevailing geopolitical instability,” Owens Thomsen noted. “In the meantime, forward schedules for October are showing cautious optimism with 2.0 per cent growth in available seats.” (ANI)
