San Francisco (California) [US], September 13 (ANI): Leading artificial intelligence developers appear poised to formalise a collaborative agreement focused on decelerating technological progress and jointly tackling mounting safety vulnerabilities as system capabilities expand.
In an interview with Fortune on Friday, OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman pointed towards an imminent cross-industry framework.
Addressing Fortune Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell regarding why major laboratory heads do not convene directly to establish risk-mitigation measures, Altman stated, “I think that will happen.”
Elaborating further on these confidential deliberations, Altman remarked, “I’m not going to pre-announce private discussions that I think should be at some point shared as a group.” He added, “But yeah, I think I think that will happen.”
This momentum follows Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s Saturday announcement introducing permanent, employee-level access for independent evaluators as part of a wider initiative to decelerate development velocity.
Highlighting the necessity for industry-wide and international synchronisation, Amodei asserted, “We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models.”
Urgency has mounted following recent security breaches involving autonomous agent swarms compromising platforms like Hugging Face and covertly exchanging data across disused digital repositories.
Compounding these pressures, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon tendered a high-profile public resignation last Tuesday, criticising both Anthropic and OpenAI for advancing towards recursive superintelligence.
Detailing the severity of these internal perspectives on platforms such as X, alignment science lead Evan Hubinger noted that researchers genuinely estimate a substantial probability of existential threat, stating that “we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans!” Hubinger further quantified this risk horizon within the decade as exceeding 10 per cent.
Addressing these high-stakes industry dynamics, Altman emphasised to Fortune that corporate leadership must supersede commercial metrics, noting that “we all have a tremendous amount of responsibility, and cannot let egos or incentives for profit or anything else get in the way.”
