India suffer 2-0 defeat against Netherlands in FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026

Amstelveen [Netherlands], August 21 (ANI): The Indian women's hockey team suffered a 0-2 defeat against the Netherlands after a hard-fought encounter, with the Dutch side maintaining their dominance through penalty corner goals from Yibbi Jansen and Frederique Matla in the ongoing FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026.
The Netherlands started strongly and took the lead in the third minute after winning an early penalty corner. Jansen converted the opportunity with a powerful drag flick, sending the ball past the Indian defence.
India showed resilience after conceding the early goal and managed to withstand relentless pressure from the Netherlands. Goalkeepers Bichu Devi and Savita produced crucial saves to keep the Dutch side from extending their lead in the first half.

India created a few opportunities of their own, with Salima Tete coming close in the opening quarter, while Navneet Kaur also tested the Dutch defence with a circle entry and shot in the second quarter.
The Netherlands continued to dominate possession after the break and doubled their advantage in the 38th minute through Matla, who converted another penalty corner after the ball deflected off an Indian defender.
India fought hard in the final quarter and tried to find a way back into the contest. Navneet created a late opportunity with a powerful effort, but the Dutch goalkeeper made a crucial save to deny the hosts.
Despite India's defensive efforts, the Netherlands controlled the closing stages of the match and secured three points. The Dutch side had earlier defeated Australia and continued their winning run in the tournament.
India will now face Australia in their next match, where they will need a victory to keep their hopes of progressing alive. (ANI)
