Keralam CM urges people to "not lose touch with pen and pencil", inaugurates International Calligraphy Festival

Kochi (Keralam) [India], October 2 (ANI): Underlining the enduring significance of handwriting in the modern digital age, Keralam Chief Minister VD Satheesan inaugurated the International Calligraphy Festival of Kerala (ICK) in Kochi, announcing that the government will consider establishing a dedicated institution to promote the art form.
Addressing the gathering at the inaugural ceremony, the Chief Minister observed that the growing use of digital screens has distanced people from personal writing styles and reduced opportunities to see and appreciate each other's handwriting.
"In this digital era, we rarely get to see each other's handwriting. Earlier, I used to think handwriting had no major role in our education. It was only when I visited England that I realised one cannot complete their studies without refining and correcting their handwriting," he said.
Satheesan also recalled the historical significance of calligraphy in the preparation of the original manuscript of the Indian Constitution and highlighted the respect accorded to the calligrapher who worked on the document.
"Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru entrusted the calligraphy of our Constitution to the renowned calligrapher Prem Behari Narain Raizada. He laid down only one condition—that his name would appear on every page, and he would add his grandfather's name on the last page. Panditji gracefully accepted this demand," Satheesan noted.
Stressing the importance of retaining the habit of writing despite the convenience offered by modern technology, the Chief Minister urged people, particularly younger generations, to maintain their connection with pen and paper.
"I cannot step out of my home without a pen and a pencil. I would like to request everyone not to lose touch with the pen and pencil. Handwriting is an art. In fact, there is even a standing order that doctors should write prescriptions in capital letters to maintain legibility," he remarked.
The Chief Minister also affirmed that the state would look into exploring institutional and academic avenues to preserve and foster calligraphy.
"There will be serious consideration toward establishing an institution dedicated to calligraphy. We will also discuss and explore the academic possibilities of incorporating calligraphy into formal learning," the Chief Minister added.
The International Calligraphy Festival of Kerala brought attention to the artistic and cultural significance of handwriting at a time when digital communication has become increasingly dominant. The event also highlighted the importance of preserving traditional forms of writing and providing opportunities for people to learn and engage with calligraphy. (ANI)
