Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], September 12 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Saturday said there should be no distinction between the ruling party and the opposition when foreign delegations visit India, as several world leaders are in the national capital for the ongoing BRICS Summit, but accused the opposition of being "completely obsessed with opposing the government."
Speaking to ANI about the BRICS Summit, Maurya said, "Whenever a delegation visits from any country in the world, they are India’s guests, and welcoming guests is the duty of every citizen. When it comes to welcoming a guest, there is no ruling party or opposition. When it comes to the nation, such divisions do not exist."
Maurya further criticised the opposition, saying, "However, the current opposition has become completely obsessed with opposing the government. That is why they are making statements in such matters that ought not to be made."
Maurya's remarks came amid the ongoing 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13 under its 2026 chairship, guided by the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability."
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Congress MP Pawan Khera slammed the BJP-led Central Government over the installation of large curtains and temporary barricades to screen off slum clusters and low-income neighbourhoods along key transit routes in the national capital ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit.
Taking a sharp swipe at the ruling party's political rhetoric, Khera accused the administration of trying to hide India's socioeconomic realities from visiting foreign dignitaries rather than addressing poverty.
Sharing the video on X, Khera posted, “Not all ‘hijabs’ are unacceptable to the BJP. The one that veils Modi’s failures is their favourite.” (ANI)
