Spilling blood in the periphery: Baloch Yakjehti Committee exposes alarming wave of target killings in Balochistan

Spilling blood in the periphery: Baloch Yakjehti Committee exposes alarming wave of target killings in Balochistan

Balochistan [Pakistan], October 7 (ANI): The Human Rights Department of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) has released alarming documentation shedding light on escalating state-sponsored repression in the region.
Taking to X to expose the grim reality, the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) shared the critical update, “Documented Cases of Target Killings in Balochistan by the Human Rights Department of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) During the First Six Months of 2026 (January - June)”.
Operating as a prominent human rights advocacy group in Balochistan, Pakistan, the BYC continues its relentless campaign against state abuses and enforced disappearances.
Families of missing persons, rights organisations, and Baloch political bodies have persistently accused Pakistani state institutions of abducting citizens without adhering to due process and confining them incommunicado.
Pakistani authorities have consistently rejected allegations of systematic involvement in enforced disappearances across multiple cases.
Activists and relatives of the missing point out that numerous disappearances remain unreported immediately after taking place. They attribute these reporting gaps to intense fear of reprisals, deep-seated security worries, and severe social pressures, warning that such constraints render the true magnitude of the crisis heavily underreported.
Against this backdrop of heavy-handed state control, the chronic issue of enforced disappearances in Balochistan has driven regional tensions for years. Observers tie the sharp rise in cases to the intensification of military operations across the province during the early 2000s, with advocacy groups like the Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan documenting vast numbers of victims spanning students, activists, journalists, and ordinary civilians, while the state continues to deny any culpability.
In an effort to manage mounting domestic and international criticism, the Pakistani government established the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances in 2011. Based on the commission's own figures, it received 10,636 complaints nationwide between March 2011 and September 2025, clearing 8,986 cases while 1,650 remained under active investigation.
Specifically regarding the province, a January 2024 report submitted to the Supreme Court placed Balochistan's total recorded figures at 2,752 cases, out of which 2,284 were resolved and 468 remained pending. Highlighting the state's blatant disregard for accountability, the same filing revealed that while the commission issued 744 production orders for missing individuals, state bodies complied with a mere 52.
Human rights organisations contend that these official figures fall drastically short of reality. Campaigners argue that the actual volume of missing persons is far higher, encompassing a backlog of unresolved cases stretching back to the early 2000s. (ANI)
